*This is an incredible place! The Wabash operates out of an old train depot which is divided into two sections and has a serving kitchen in the middle. One half is a smoking section which was neat to see and I was delighted that there was an actual wall in between this area and the non-smoking section. The decor includes some railroad collectibles and a nice glass oak case for checking out. The sauce is available by the bottle and made it on my "to go" order. I ordered the long end rib lunch and they were the best ribs I have ever eaten at bar-b-q place!! The seasoning on them was delicious and they were served without sauce. There was no need for sauce. They were tender, meaty and delicious. I got a slab to go which I froze in foil and had four days later. They were still as good! The fries were wedge cut with the skins on and I loved them. Wabash sauce comes in regular flavors and hot. I preferred the regular. It was great on my fries too. The tea there is brewed and refills on drinks are provided. That made it a great value. They have won ribbons for their smoked chicken, which I also took home. Again, it was still a treat after I froze it and had it four days later. The brick building creates a nice rustic ambience. There is a building out back where the smoking is done and a large outdoor area for catering big functions, music festivals and the like. The staff were courteous and we kept them busy. It was about 45 miles from JCCC and worth every minute of it. We took the opportunity to visit the Elms and see some of the beautiful renovation they have done. I am already making plans to get back to the Wabash and the those ribs!

*This was an excellent restaurant. The converted railroad station made for a good atmosphere and it is right down the street form the Elms hotel. The ribs were outstanding and I would travel another hour just for the ribs. the baked beans were a little peppery and a little too strong for me. Everyone at the restaurant seemed very pleasant and the service was good. The tour of the Elms was a nice touch and I think after eating all that BBQ, the spas looked real nice.

*THE RIBS WERE AS GOOD AS I HAVE EVER TASTED. THE FRIES WERE GOOD. NO CREAM SODA. LOCATED IN AN OLD TRAIN DEPOT WAS DIFFERENT. I WOULD CERTAINLY GO BACK AND TAKE OUT OF TOWN PEOPLE THERE. SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. CHOICE OF TWO SAUCES.

*The ribs were great, pork on the sandwich was too dry, but tender. The meat was cut thick, which was a good thing.

*I enjoyed everything about the Wabash except the 45 miles it takes to get there. The sauce is sweet but with character. The brisket is lean and smoky tasting (one cannot always taste the smoke at other places). I'll go back the next time I'm on my way to Chicago or Winnipeg.

*Wabash BBQ is well worth the trek to Excelsior Springs! The sandwich, ribs, fries, and beans rank with the best in KC. The meat had great smoked flavor (it's always a good sign when you can see the smokehouse in the parking lot as you walk in!). The beans were excellent, although I would have liked more for $2. The sauce was thick and spicy and had outstanding, rich flavor. My sandwich with fries and a side order of beans was $8.50 + tip. So it wasn't a cheap lunch but it was great quality and I left full and happy. The service was great -- very friendly folk at this old railway station. It was nice to be back on the G.A.S. BBQ train!

*It is a long ways over there! The food made it worth it. Great smoked flavor in the meat. Sauce was great. Wonderful atmosphere. All in all a good lunch trip. The part of our group that passed on this because it was so far…needs to make the trip.  After this review...Anderson, who claims Mary Jean left him at the curb hungry, is probably planning revenge!

Mary Jean took so many good pictures that I had to include this one of the Elm's Hotel.  So, for the first time we feature "the building across the street from the BBQ place".   Maybe we should make this a regular feature?  We could call it "adjacent architecture".
