*Pulled
Pork. Vermont Street BBQ, now on Massachusetts Street (is that
confusing) is one of my favorite BBQ joints in the area. They
had recently moved to the Mass. Street Location and now offer a
dine-in experience. I used to stop at their former location for
BBQ but it was a carry out place. The new location is in a great
old building in downtown Lawrence. Their Pulled Pork is the best
I’ve had in the 8 years of doing these reviews. It surprises
me as to the number of BBQ places that don’t offer Pulled
Pork. Sliced Pork is an inferior option when compared to
Pulled. The Pork has a thick smoky flavor with a mix of burnt,
crunchy end pieces. The small sandwich is 1/3 lb. and is served
up on Lawrence’s Great Harvest Bread. A perfect
combination. The beans were OK but they could use more
work. I had the Potato Salad – which was very good instead of
fries. They had 3 different sauces and I really liked the
Hickory flavored one. They also have a nice Carolina style
sauce. Service was great and I love the atmosphere of this
place. Vermont Street BBQ is without a doubt, the best in
Lawrence and is better than a good number of places in KC.
Definitely worth a trip over there. I’ll be back.
*I
got a tough piece of brisket on my sandwich, which I believe was
unusual – everyone else who had the brisket was pleased. The
beans are wonderful and the hickory sauce is great. Our server
did a great job of seeing to our needs. The place is new and
still needs décor, but the location is good and there’s plenty of
seating. I want to go back and try the pulled pork that others were
raving about.
*This
was a great place for BBQ. If you want good BBQ in Lawrence,
this is the place to go. This was a first for our group.
We had more women(4) than men(3). I think most of us had good
meals and the service was excellent. The pulled pork was great
and probably some of the best on the circuit. The owner came out
and talked to us. He is a recent KU grad who wants to see good
BBQ in Lawrence. I would recommend this very highly to anyone
who enjoys the Jayhawk atmosphere and some good BBQ
*The
brisket was good but did not have as smoky of a flavor
as other brisket. The pulled pork was good but I had a lot of
burnt and blackened pieces in my sandwich that were though and
not eatable. The non-sweet sauce was very good and one of the
better that I have tasted. The yellow Carolina sauce was also
good. The coleslaw was notably good with a creamy
sauce. The beans were below average. They did not
used the regular bean and I think that they used a northern bean and
the flavor to the beans was below average. The bread
on the sandwich was excellent because it came from the bakery down the
street. Unfortunately, I would probably not go back unless
there were some major changes.
*We
didn't arrive at this place until about 1:45 pm and we were
hungry. Our waitress did a good job helping us right away.
The surprise with the brisket sandwich I ordered was that it came
on Great Harvest white bread. I love their bread. The
brisket, however, was not as smoky as I like. The three
kinds of sauce added variety, including the mustard sauce.
The beans were not smoked either. I didn't get the close slaw,
but it looked good and the rest of the group like it.
*Beans
were not good. I had the sausage sandwich and it did not have a smoked
taste. The service was excellent and the sandwich and 2 sides
for $6.50 was a real value. Good cold slaw. Should have
tried the ribs.
*The
pork sandwich was excellent. I liked the fact that everything
was made from scratch. Even the bread was homemade from a local
vendor. The beans and cole slaw were tasty, too.
