*I
liked Stonewall Inn. We arrived with 16 people and it was one of our
larger groups for GAS. I had the ham, fries and beans. The beans were
excellent and the ham was very good. The sauce had a little
"bite" and it was good. It was good to have Dr. Grove with
us.
*The
beef was the best I have had in a great awhile. The sauce is good.
The "home fries" were a home style touch that is a welcome change
from regular french fries.
*The
idea of giving a group of 17, one ticket to split could be the kiss of death
for this established restaurant trying to become a BBQ destination.
They have good smoked meat…. It is a good start. I will be
back.
*I
like that it's so close, and I will try it again with a smaller crowd to see
if the service is faster.
*I
loved that this restaurant is located in an old house on Pflumm, complete
with a fireplace near the bar. Our end of the table was chilly as we
were in a breezeway near the drink station. Our group was very large
so it took an hour to serve all 17 of us. I'd have to say that the
sliced beef brisket sandwich I had was excellent, full of flavor and I would
order it again. The baked beans had a kind of savory flavor with some
grit to the sauce that I did not like. The BBQ sauce is not on the
table and has a kind of kick to it, a little too hot for me. I tasted
some of the burnt ends and thought they were a must order for another
time. I would definitely go back and sit closer to the fireplace!
*I
didn’t care for the beans – much too vinegar, no sweetness or smoke
flavour to them. I give high marks to the server – he did a good job
considering that there were 18 of us.
*I
think the food is somewhat overpriced, but that is in keeping with Johnson
County prices! This place is not primarily a BBQ joint and there are
many other places in the area to get good barbeque.
*I
would return to Stonewall for BBQ only if they added flavor to their sauce
and baked beans. The portions were quite good, and the beef had a
good smoky taste, but I saw no smoke ring.
*I
had the ham platter with two
sides. The ham was excellent. The beans looked and tasted like
they came out of a can. The home fries were really like hash
browns. It took a long time to get our food. The waiter was very
good and did the best he could to serve as many people as were there.
Not really a BBQ experience I would want to have again.
*Stonewall
seems like a wonderful place to go if you've just finished your annual fox
hunt and you want to sit for awhile, relax, read the paper, discuss sports
or Tory politics with the locals, or just soak in some English cottage
ambiance next to a real wood burning hearth. Whether or not that's
someplace you want to go for BBQ, that's for you to decide. We were a
large group and that seemed to tax the sparse lunch time wait staff.
Our order was taken relatively quickly and the food came in a reasonable
amount of time. I had the 1/2 chicken BBQ platter with BBQ beans and
"home" fries. The beans were, hmmmm, different. I
thought I liked them at first, but as I ate more, the spiciness continued to
build past the point of enjoyment. Not overwhelmingly hot, just not a
pleasing combo of spices to my palate. The "home" fries are
seasoned potato wedges and they are just, "okay". I would
probably get the French Fries (Freedom Fries if you like) if I could turn
back time (If I could do that I wouldn't be here writing this review).
The smoked chicken garners mixed reviews. The dark meat was moist with
a good smoky flavor, but the white meat sections were a tad dry. I
would give the chicken a second chance because I think it has potential.
The sauce was non-descript, but a "proper" amount was applied.
At $11.00 (including tax and tip) I wouldn't make it a regular BBQ lunch
stop, but I might go back to Stonewall for a warm fire, a cold pint, bangers
and mash and Yorkshire pudding. Tally Ho.
*The
brisket was smoked and had a good flavor, but a little dry. The sauce
was good and had a spicy kick to it. The coleslaw was just average.
The waiter was slow and not accommodating with a big group. It took
over 1.5 hours to get our food and finish. That is not acceptable for
the lunch hour. I may go back on a weekend. They do not do their
ribs in-house if you are interested in the ribs.
*The
other food on the menu is much better than the BBQ.
*The
burnt ends were very tender but lacked a full-flavor BBQ taste. The
fries and slaw could be purchased at any number of restaurants in the area.
The restaurant itself was quaint but drafty. The service was
agonizingly slow.
*Too
bad the beans were sooo bad, they brought the overall down. Everything
else was good, but beans are very important to me
*I
ordered the beef sandwich, beans, and water ($7.75 plus tax) and we waited
about an hour for our food. The beef was better than I expected as it
was actually smoked. The beans were the worst I've ever eaten because
they had zero taste even after I dumped barbecue sauce on them. I
found it outrageous that the Stonewall folks make their own barbecue sauce,
but they don't keep any bottles on the table. What's up with that?
We had to ask for additional sauce which was served in a very small
container. For this, our group had the privilege of paying an 18%
gratuity and having our charges placed on one bill. After we asked the
waiter if he could split out the charges, he told us it would take 20
minutes as the computers were slow. On the way out, the waiter said,
"I hope you come back." My impression of his comment was he
knew the service and food were poor.
*Much
character and atmosphere at the Stonewall Inn. Good BBQ to boot.
I had a Brisket Sandwich and it was a good sized Sandwich piled high with
smoky tender beef. The sauce had some zing to it but not sure if it is
their own stuff. The beans were, in a word, horrible. They
tasted like a can of Van Camps baked in an oven. No taste
whatsoever. They need a lot of help on the beans. I'd skip the
beans and order some of the potatoes. They looked pretty good. I
didn't order them but those who did will be sure to comment. Great
atmosphere at the Stonewall Inn. Nice (real & working) fireplace
by the Bar. Neat vibe to the place. Service was OK given that
this may have been our largest group outing in years. Huge turnout!
I'd go back again and try some other things on the menu. Just
across the parking lot, you can get some Stonewall Inn Pizza. They
make great Pizza. I'd be interested in knowing some of the history
behind the Stonewall Inn. The restaurant has been there since 78 but
the house the restaurant works out of has been there for much longer.
Fun trip!
