*The
quality and quantity of meat on the combination sandwich (beef and pork) was
good. Fries and beans were both good.
*I don't know of any other place except Wellsville where patrons drive
their lawnmower in for lunch! I
liked most everything about Smokey’s, but the beef had no smoky flavor which I
find ironic given the name of the place. The
sauces are good, but the mild lacks character fer sher--too much like catsup,
and the hot sauce is really hot; so I feel like Goldilocks looking for just
right. The chunky sauce is my
favorite.
*Take a trip down to Smokey's BBQ in Wellsville, Kansas - it's worth the trip!
Located on Main Street in downtown Wellsville, you will find Smokey's BBQ in a
building that is at least 100 years old. Classic small town BBQ experience.
I
had a Pork Sandwich, Fries and Beans. The Sandwich was good but would have been
better as some chunks of the pulled Pork did not seem to have enough smoke
flavor in the meat. Other pieces of the meat were great. The Sandwich was
massive for $3.75. The Fries were piping hot and loaded high on the
"plate". Beans were very good - among the best along our odyssey.
Smokey's serves up three different sauces. The first one is like catsup, the
second one is real thick with a good taste and the third is very spicy. Overall,
portions were big and prices low - outstanding value. Great BBQ atmosphere at
Smokey's. They also serve a variety of other foods, which is usually not a good
sign when looking for BBQ but owner Darren Maples is able to pull off great BBQ
at Smokey's. I'll drive back again.
*Smokey’s was a great place for BBQ.
One of the hidden gems on
our list. I might be brave enough to say that it is on my top five list.
Everything was perfect for me. I had a great ham sandwich, hot delicious fries
and outstanding beans. In addition to my great meal, the fried pickles that
Jerry and Marilyn shared with us were excellent. I enjoyed the atmosphere
because it was in an old building in downtown Wellsville, Ks which the owner had
renovated and felt like a good old
BBQ hangout. If I talk any longer, I might get in my car and pay them another
visit real soon like........
*I had the Carolina Sandwich
which was pulled pork and a vinegar mustard sauce with cole slaw. It was a great
combination. I would say that the pork had a good taste but was a little dry.
The fried pickles (frickles) were excellent and I am not a pickle lover.
The
variety of sauces were very unique. The hot sauce was great and very hot.
T he
chunky sauce was also very good. The vinegar mustard sauce was also good.
They
were all made locally by the owner. The beans were also very good and everyone
seemed to enjoy them. The cole slaw was also very good. There atmosphere was a
very unique old restored building and gave it character. I would definitely go
back to try the beef and the ribs. I like the fact that they try other varieties
of barbeque other than the KC style. They also pick up unique side dishes like
fried okra and pickles. |
