*The Smokey Pelican was a smoky place inside, especially in
the bathrooms! Maybe it is not vented as much as it should
be. My brisket sandwich was chewy and seemed liked it had
been cooked days before. We asked for sauce as there was no
sauce on the tables. I liked its flavor, but wanted it to be
more available. We were a large group and asked for separate
checks, which they provided. If it was closer, I would go
back to try them again. None of us had the seafood and maybe
that is more of a specialty than the BBQ.
*I wasn't impressed with Smokey Pelican. The service was
okay. My ham sandwich was okay. The fries were okay. The
atmosphere was okay. My visit was okay. I gave it a "6"
because it was okay. I give this place one year before it
closes down.
*A mediocre BBQ experience. Sandwich was so so, fries
average, usual small bean portions. The sauce was doled out
in tiny plastic cups - not near enough. Let me offer up a
BBQ tip here, put the bottle on the table! Service was slow
even though we were the only group in there at 1:00 in the
afternoon. Not a good sign. If you are up in this neck of
the woods, do yourself a favor and go to Bates City BBQ and
skip the Smokey Pelican.
*The appearance of this restaurant was deceiving. It looks
like it would be a good place to eat for large groups and
families. The menu looked like it had a lot of barbeque and
seafood choices. The experience went down from there. The
waitress appeared irritated to provide separate checks even
though we were the only table in that room and there were
very few people in the other room. The other server kept
sighing when she delivered each of our drinks. I ordered a
poor boy sandwich with half turkey and beef and received
only the beef. Three or four people did not receive their
food until we were almost done with our food. They would not
substitute a side for fries, which is a nice option that
some of the better barbeque restaurants provide. The beef
was grisly and not a good flavor. The fries and the coleslaw
were awful. I tried the entree that I think was called rib
tips, which were worse than my brisket. The sauce was not
bad but we had to request it and they only gave us little
individual cups with it. I would not return, nor recommend
this restaurant and think that this was the consensus of the
group. It also took us 2 hours to have lunch when we were
only about 15 minutes from our destination.
*The Po' Boy beef and pork sandwich was fatty and didn't
seem particularly well smoked. The beans were bland bland
bland. Okay, what's with this barbecue industry standard of
serving beans in the smallest container possible? C'mon
restaurateurs, beans are probably the cheapest item with the
largest profit margin for a barbecue restaurant plus they
can be left to simmer all day without having to constantly
make fresh servings. Then, I was aghast when there was no
barbecue sauce either on the table or served with the meal!
We had to ask for barbecue sauce. You don't ask for barbecue
sauce at a good barbecue restaurant in Kansas City. I
predict this place will likely go out of business within
three months.
*Perhaps I should have tried the seafood since there seemed
to be endless seafood choices on the menu(?) Great
company! Thanks.
*Both the food and the service were mediocre at best. The
meat (rib ends) tasted like just a cooked meat with some
sauce thrown on top – nothing special about it. The coleslaw
was chopped vegetables with a vinegar dressing and the beans
also had a vinegar flavour. The wait staff was lacking in
enthusiasm and service was slow.
*Next time I visit the Rusty Pelican, I will try the
seafood.
*New place with a
varied menu that includes seafood. A decent, sit-down meal,
but nothing worth driving too far to experience.
