Verbatim Comments:

*The wait in line was long . . . .food was okay.

*Santa Fe Trail BBQ was okay but not one of my favorite places. My ham sandwich was a little dry and the fries didn't have much flavor. The visit the 2nd time around was a little better but still gave it bad ratings. Overall, the place was pretty bland and Smoking Joes is still the best place for BBQ in Olathe.

Well, we finally hit the trail today. It was just a matter of time before we had to officially review this one. They take orders from the counter which is my favorite service style. We got there during their noon rush so it took awhile to order. The combo sandwich was an odd combo - beef and ham. Good sized sandwich, with fries and a medium drink for $6.99 The beans were an extra $1.19 and not worth it. They need to ditch this recipe and start over. The brisket was good but the ham was.....well it was ham - nothing extraordinary about that. Fries were a bit greasy and the prices seemed to be on the high side to me. As a sauce guy, I like most sauces but this was not a good product. Very runny and little flavor. I liked the atmosphere and the opportunity for all of us to sit at a big table. Years ago, when I moved to KC and well before G.A.S.  I used to think this was good BBQ. Santa Fe Trail, in my opinion, is middle of the trail BBQ.

*Long line at lunch but worth the wait.   The rib meats was tender and they were very good with the sauce.

*Standing in line is the thing I will remember about this experience. The fries on the combo plate were different than the cut fries on side orders. I would say this was a little above average place to eat . They did have red cream soda and the sauce was above average. Nice day and the company was great. The portions and price were above average.

*olathe is to bar-b-q what macy grey is to the blues... (Excuse this, Dick has a longstanding issue with Olathe…something from his childhood I assume.)

Keep taking the Santa Fe Trail on over to Smokin' Joe's or Big Bubba's if you're in Olathe for cue.  The beef sandwich was tender, the wedge fries were okay, and the portions were filling, but that's about as good as it got.  The sauce had no spice to it, the beef wasn't smoked and the beans were out of the can with a little ketchup mixed in to throw people off.  Oh, and one other thing, the shrubbery was some of the nicest that I've seen at a bbq place.

*The meat smoked and tende
r, but the sauce is very, very plain.  If they had a decent sauce the meal would have been much better.  They are one of the few places in the metro that can host large crowds.   It was a decent lunch, but below average.
