The G.A.S.
Barbecue Odyssey
G.A.S. (Gastronomic Appreciation
Society) Barbecue is a group of folks from Kansas City in search of...well...we don't know
exactly what we're looking for, but we're definitely on a quest.
Our
journey began when Jeff Anderson, Jeffrey Couch, Dave Ellis, and Rick Moehring sat in Hayward's, the only
place Anderson, Ellis, and Moehring had ever gone for lunchtime barbecue, eating
barbecue. Couch
boasted to the guys that they hadn't tasted barbecue until they'd eaten at Bates City Bar B Que. A debate followed as to where the best
barbecue
could be found. Anderson, Ellis, and Moehring
called Couch's bluff and made him take them to Bates City.
It was
during the drive back from Bates City that G.A.S. Barbecue was born. Moehring and
Couch talked about a barbecue odyssey that would include all kinds of
over-the-top experiences...most of which have serendipitously come to
pass. Couch also thought it would be funny to call their group the Gastronomic
Appreciation Society or G.A.S.
So...we, and our colleagues, convene once a month and travel to a local (meaning anywhere we can get to over an
extended lunch hour) barbecue establishment in order to review it. We think
it's pretty great to be doing something we're passionate about and for
which we know no other group is doing, to the best of our knowledge, in the
entire Universe.
We're
also proud of the fact that our group brings together various folks from around
our campus
who either don't know each other or don't normally get a
chance to
interact. Unfortunately, judging from their absence at subsequent restaurant
jaunts, it seems they'd rather keep it that way.
You
may have noticed that there is nothing fancy about this site...because
as Arthur Bryant said, "You don't get fancy with barbecue. When you get fancy, you get out of line."
