*We arrived at this restaurant just in time as a lunch crowd quickly came
in making it very busy for our waitress. One of the owners, Jean, came over and
talked about the history of the restaurant as some of us remembered a Marty's
restaurant on Metcalf in Overland Park. There used to be a connection many years
ago, but no longer now. I ordered
the burnt ends, which came with beans and fries. The beans were excellent and
the best item I tried that day. Jerry let me try his sweet potato fries and they
were the best I've ever had. My burnt ends were a bit rubbery and my fries
tasted like the oil needed to be changed. Others who ordered the brisket said it
was delicious so I'll try that next time. I also ordered chicken for our family
dinner that night. It was the special of the day. It was liberally seasoned with
pepper, which my 9 and 13 year old children didn't appreciate as much as I did.
They also loved the beans. For parties of 8 or more, a gratuity of 18% is
required and usually one ticket for the table. They gave us separate tickets as
a courtesy. My ticket included my carry out order and 18% tip on the whole bill.
I called and talked to one of the managers and to their credit they have
indicated that they will correct this oversight.
*I really liked the quality of the meat on the beef sandwich.
I just thought, for the money, the sandwich should have been larger.
I was still hungry. Very
good beans. Nice people who run it.
I didn't think it was necessary to include 18% gratuity for a party of
8.
*I had a good meal at Marty’s. My ham sandwich was excellent and everything was
hot and tasty. The beans were some of the best I have tasted since we started
this group. They rate up there with Smokestacks and the Filling Station. I was a
little disappointed with the service and having to give the waitress a 18% tip
because we were a large group. I ended up giving her two tips because I didn't
know she put the tip on my bill. I should have checked my bill but I was a
little ticked. I think the next time we eat out, we sit at separate tables, ask
for our checks early and then put our tables together.
*The ribs were really meaty; like they didn't come from a pig, but a HOG.
*The smoked chicken with the sauce was very good.
*Marty's is a very good place to take a date (as long as they like good BBQ).
I wish it were closer to my home. I
always like sweet potato fries; and the beans were especially good.
Marty's has to rank high on the scale.
*The service was outstanding and the ribs were as meaty as any I have had.
The sweet potato fries were good and the sauce was better than average. The
required 18% tip would prevent me from going back. Mary Jean was charged 18% on
her carry out. They had cream soda
and two kinds of sauce one hot and the other mild. The beans were as good as any
I have had with bits of meat in them.
*Sandwich, fries, beans and a drink for $11.00?? Comparatively speaking, this was
an expensive lunch. Our party of 8 was socked for a group tip. That might be the
first time that has happened. I had
the Messy Marty sandwich which was miscellaneous meat bits. The texture of the
meat lead me to think that it was pre-chewed. Probably would not order it again.
IMO, Snead’s has the best chopped meat sandwich in town. However, the beans
were among the best in KC along with good fries and good sauce. Marty's makes
their own sauces - both a regular and a hot. Service was OK and a nice
atmosphere. The overall rating would have been higher if not for the low value
rating. We've been at this for 5 years now and this was the most expensive
outing to date. |
