*This
has to be one of the best sit down and order places we have been to in a long
time. I had an excellent meal with the ham sandwich, fries and those great baked
beans. This was a sure bet for my top ten BBQ places and I would not
hesitate going back when I am heading out towards the turnpike. The folks were
real friendly and the place was clean and they made us feel right at home. The
baked beans are in my top three along with Jack Stack BBQ and The Filling
Station.
*Burnt ends were nice and tender, not much fat.
Not too smoky flavored, more like roast. There was enough to take home for supper!!
Cruise'n to Bonner with friends was nice.
*I had the Burnt Ends and it was excellent.
Tender and smoky with just the right amount of charring.
Beans were very flavorful with bits of meat.
Portions were average, but reasonable.
Sauce was too bland for my tastes, even the hot sauce lacked distinction.
Good atmosphere, but more like a family style restaurant, rather than a
BBQ joint. Service was friendly and
prompt. Overall a good eating
experience.
*Stay away -- far away -- from the turkey .
*My first trip to downtown DeSoto (Editorial comment: ...sorry to tell you this
Jeff, but you were in Bonner Springs!). Named after the Spanish Conquistador perhaps?
They were out of pork when I ordered so I had to settle for beef. What a bummer.
There was no hint of smoke flavor in my beef sandwich. No trace of a smoke ring
either. Tasted like a beef roast. The sauce was pretty average and didn't really
provide much help. However, the fries and beans were decent. Nice atmosphere and
friendly service. A small town feel to the place. Portions were good and prices
reasonable. Longhorn has the potential to be a good BBQ place. Before that cam
happen, they need to get the smoke flavor in the meat. I drove Janna's PT
Cruiser back from DeSoto. Nice car.
*I was disappointed in the
slow service as our waiter took one or two orders at a time and served only two drinks at a time. Three of us were
served a good 15 minutes later than the rest of the group. I ordered a brisket
sandwich with sauce on the side and beans. My husband, Gordon, joined us and
ordered turkey, beans, fries and slaw. His turkey sandwich was like deli meat
and appeared to not have been smoked in the least. It was awful. The fries were
pretty good as was the Cole slaw. The beans were the best item of all. They were
rather small, tasted smoky with some meat pieces
and good overall flavor.
*It is fun to discover downtown Bonner Springs.
The beef was tender, but really needed the sauce for flavor.
I often will eat it plain, but this time found myself dipping each bite
in the sauce. It needed more smoke
and rub. The ribs were tender to a
fault. They separated from the bone
before you picked them up. Not a
good rib trait. They also lacked
smoke/spice flavor. Both were tasty
with sauce. The beans were very
smoky tasting. Longhorn BBQ handled our group well, gave us separate checks and
had a nice backroom for a large group.
It was worth the trip and I would go back.
They just need to learn not to lean so hard on the sauce for the flavor.
*The beef and the pork ribs were almost tasteless. Lots of food for the price.
Nice drive up in the PT cruiser. The V4 engine really puts out the horsepower.
The fries were above average. Nothing there to make it worthwhile to drive back.
The service was excellent.
*...ah Bonner Springs, gateway to Wilder, Frisbie and Loring....such a
picturesque truck stop of a town. was
disappointed that there was no pork...the "burnt ends" were really
cubes of beef -- okay flavor, just not real burnt ends.
liked the sauce and the beans. (Editorial comment: This person was
regrettably left at the curb and had to drive himself. The subsequent mood
he was in very likely tainted his view of Bonner, which most of us found quite
charming) |
