BITE BY BYTE - Have a
G.A.S.
Jane Berkowitz
It began over lunch at Hayward's -- collegues from Johnson County
Community College discussing where the best barbecue could be found in
Kansas City. It's evolved into G.A.S. (Gastronomic Appreciation Society),
currently composed of 23 faculty and staff members from JCCC who meet each
month for a barbecue adventure.
And now, thanks to G.A.S.'s webmaster, Rick Moehring, we can share the
adventure in my November Pick of the Month for Best Kansas City
Food-Related Website.
Join in the fun as the G.A.S. guys and gals tour such gems as Hayward's
Pit Bar-B-Que, Bates City Barbecue, Rosedale Barbecue, Snead's Bar-B-Q,
Arthur Bryant's, Boardroom Bar-B- Q, B B's Lawnside, Smoke Stack (now
Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue), LC's, Big Bubba's Bar-B-Q,, Guy and Mae's
Tavern, Greenwood BBQ, LT's Finest Bar-B-Q, Lil' Jake's Eat It & Beat
It, Stilwell Smokehouse, Oklahoma Joe's BBQ, Gates Bar- B-Q, Rouse's
Bar-B-Que, Laura's BBQ and Stuff, Nichols Bar BQ, Quick's, K & M BBQ,
Doc & Brutie's Pizza Q, Johnny's, 135th St. Bar-B-Que, Winslow's City
Market Barbecue and Jake Edward's. They've included their reviews,
comments and photos (when available).
They've also rated the various components of barbecue, and though you'll
have to visit the G.A.S. website for specifics, many of my favorites also
came out with top grades. Some of the high praise award winners are Beans
at Smoke Stack/Fiorella's Jack Stack, Sandwich/Meat at Laura's BBQ and
Stuff, Ribs at Rosedale and BB's, Fries at LT's, Sauce at Oklahoma Joe's,
Atmosphere at BB's, Portions at Smokestack/Fiorella's Jack Stack and
Laura's BBQ and Stuff, Value at K & M, service at Smoke Stack/Fiorella's
Jack Stack, and Overall Rating at LC's.
I particularly appreciate the simplicity of the website and ease of
maneuvering. It's suitable for all browsers, frame or non-frames, and
claims to follow Arthur Bryant's creed: "You don't get fancy with
barbecue. When you get fancy, you get out of line."
Charter members of G.A.S. include Jeff "Sauce" Anderson, Jeffrey
"It's Gotta Be Smoked, Baby" Couch, Dave "Portions"
Ellis, Rick "Napkins" Moehring, Dan "Rich and Spicy"
Mueller, and Dick "Wanna split a pig with me?" Vallandingham.
Other members include Andrew "Charcoal Andy" McGlone, Jerry
"Combo-Plate" Wolfskill, Dick "Red Cream" Stine, Todd
"Baby-Back" Schemmel, Harold "Rib-Rub" Reuber, Ron
Frigault, Robert Sindt, Russ Everhart, Darwin Lawyer, Travis Bohrer,
Burgess Burch, John Hanysz, Dave Pearce, Jim Pickernell, Wendy Farwell,
Ann Schwartz and Mary Jean Costello.
Several of the G.A.S. gang have attended the Kansas City Barbecue
Society's barbecue judge training and are now available for judging
contests. Their inaugural judging was at the recent Great Lenexa BBQ
Battle.
