*This is a great
place to eat. I had a good sandwich, fries and beans. The atmosphere is
very rustic with the old walls and the vault which has been converted to
a restroom. I would have no problem going back to Hillsdale BBQ. It was
great to have my mother attend for the second time. We can start calling
her the BBQ Mama.
*I really
enjoyed the building (old bank building with exposed brick walls, arched
windows, punched tin ceiling, restrooms in the old bank vault, the
addition with the train caboose, etc.) ... excellent atmosphere.
Our friendly, attentive waitress added to the atmosphere and we even got
a tour of the joint from the owner before we left. My turkey
sandwich was pretty tasty, but I would have liked it more if the
sandwich was a little larger. The sauce is pretty good as well and
I appreciated the full squirt bottles on the tables so that I could
apply sauce as I saw fit. The potato salad was predictable yet
good. The beans had good flavor with nice pieces of meat, but
seemed little mushy (overcooked?) to me. Overall, a very nice,
little BBQ joint that I would recommend to anyone. It's worth the
drive.
*I'm happy to
see this place up and running again. We were here about 4 years ago. The
place had closed for a couple of years and the same owner is back. I
believe this family has run the BBQ since 89. I ordered a Brisket
sandwich, fries and beans. The beef had an outstanding smoky flavor and
was extremely lean. The beans were decent but not in the same class as
the Martin City Smokestack's - the litmus test for all bean dishes. The
fries were ok. Should have ordered the Sweet Potato Fries as they tasted
better. The sauce was among the best I've had. Just the right blend of
sweet and spicy. They have a hot sauce too which is very good. They sell
the sauce at the Bank BBQ and you can buy it in a regular sized bottle
or a large size jug. This Hillsdale Bank BBQ, IMO, has the best BBQ
atmosphere of any place we have seen in 6 some years on the tour. Great
small town location/environment. I gave it a 10 rating on Atmosphere -
the only one I've given since we've been at this. Friendly service. The
owner had his daughter there today to serve food. Good value and good
portions. I will definitely go back again. They are open on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday and soon on Sunday. Hours are somewhat limited so
I'd call before you drive down. After you eat, head on over to the Lake!
Dave's Mom was with us again today. Great to see her and I think she is
now a regular member. She needs a nickname.
*Rustic
atmosphere and excellent service. Red cream soda and sweet potato fries
with no skin. Pork sandwich was above average and I bought a bottle of
their sauce. Nice trip down did not go the first time. Worth the trip.
*The atmosphere
was small, clean and quaint. It had a wonderful aroma of the food we
were about to sample. The pork and beef sandwich that I ordered was
great with a large amount of meat. The barbeque sauce was some of the
best that I had tried. I liked it so well that I bought a bottle to take
home and share with the family. The sweet potato fries were excellent.
Though this is only the second time that I have tried them, everyone at
the table agreed and seemed to like them better than the regular fries.
The baked beans were average, but Smoke Stack still has the best baked
beans. It is definitely a place worth visiting again. They are
only open on Thursdays and Fridays, but will be open on Saturdays and
soon on Sundays. You may want to call before you go to verify that they
are open, but it is well worth the drive to experience this great
barbeque restaurant.
*Turkey was
moist and tender but not much smoke flavor.
*Great setting
and amazing burnt ends! The beans were not much, but the overall
meal was great. They make great sauce. The restaurant has
recently re-opened and uses and old bank and a railroad car for seating.
It is a great trip out in the country.
