*What I great
trip! Stine gave us the unofficial Stine family KCK history
tour. It was a good meal. The sandwich was very good.
The beans and sauce are not up to par for me. But overall well
worth a trip to KC.
*Check this
one out!
*The brisket
sandwich was very good. The meat was very tender and juicy and
the bun was fresh. The sauce was also good and had a slight
vinegar taste to it. It was not too sweet or too vinegary.
The fries were thick and not as crispy as I prefer, but not soggy
either. I was able to share a small (thimble size) portion of
beans that had a very good taste. The cole slaw had a very
different taste to it that I could not identify. They were
either too salty or were a special ethnic recipe. They had a
vinegar base and celery seeds, but did not care for it that
much. Again the slaw was also a thimble size portion. I
assume the portions were small because they were part of the special.
If you ordered a regular order of cole slaw or beans, it appeared that
they were served in a regular cup, not like the specials. The
restaurant was like a little dinner and was
*I thought
Hickory Log was good. My ham sandwich and fries were okay.
The beans didn't have much taste. It sounds like everyone else
enjoyed their meal. I would probably buy something different if
I go back. I liked the small restaurant atmosphere and enjoyed
meeting one of the owners. They are from Croatia and their
relatives run RC's BBQ on Parallel.
*Hickory Log
is a very pleasant lunch stop. The owners are good hosts.
My beef sandwich was very good--tender, moist, lean. The sauce
is very tasty, too without being too spicy. I like my cold slaw
to retain its natural sweetness, but these are very salty. My
only other complaint is the portions. Beans-in-a-thimble is not
a good idea no matter how good the beans. And a $6.75 sandwich
should be larger than a hamburger bun.
*A nice
little surprise we found along the G.A.S. trail. Never heard of
the place till the other day. The owners have had the place for
the past 30 years. Nice folks. Good service. Kind of
a small town feel in KCKS. I ordered the Jayhawker lunch
special. Brisket sandwich, Fries, Beans for $6.75 I
believe. The Brisket was very good. Nice and tender and
good smoked flavor. Fries were done just right and the beans
were also very good but they came in a tiny paper cup serving!!
Once again....If you are going to offer beans as a side, serve them up
in decent portions. A thimble full of beans is not going to pass
as a side. Beans do not cost that much to make. Serve 'em
up!!!!!!! Portions wise, I thought the sandwich could have been
bigger so I had to rate them a bit down in portions and value.
However, what I had was real good. Great atmosphere for a BBQ
joint. After Lunch, Dick took us on a tour of his boyhood home
of KSKS. Well...actually it was a drive down Leavenworth
Road. Many stories along the way. Overall a nice
experience. I'd go back!
