(We went back to the Filling Station because it changed owners since we
first reviewed it.)
*After
hearing the rave reviews about this place, I was a little disappointed in this
outing. It's still pretty good BBQ but I wouldn't rate it in my top 5.
I got the rib combo (3 ribs, 1 meat, fries and beans) and got plenty of
food so the Filling Station did live up to its name. The ribs and pulled pork
were dry though and the beans lacked some flavor and were too runny. The sauce
was just not my type of sauce. It had too many peppers for me - almost felt like
I was eating salsa. The service and
atmosphere were excellent, too bad the BBQ wasn't quite as good.
*Located in an old converted gas station, this BBQ is a nice, clean and cozy
place. The beef sandwich was good, but not great.
Fries were average. It was a fun place to visit and I enjoyed the trip
over to Lee's Summit.
*The atmosphere was a old gas station that had an old diner feel. It was clean
and small. I had a pulled pork and beef sandwich and thought the pulled pork was
excellent. The beef did not have a lot of flavor and therefore I did not rate
the sandwich as high. I tried the fries and they were also great. The beans were
very good as well with chunks of meat, but not as good as Smokestack's beans. I
liked the sauce a lot and thought it was one of my favorites, referring to the
mild sauce. Others may not like it as much because it is not your
"typical" barbeque sauce. It had a sweet vinegar taste and was chunky
like Mexican salsa.
*I know they have
changed management but I still enjoy going to the Filling Station. I had a good
ham sandwich, fries and beans. The atmosphere is great and the service was
excellent. The only thing that has changed for me from the last trip is the
beans. Something is missing from the first time I tasted the beans. They were
good but didn't have that smoky flavor that I remember. We had a good group (14)
with two new members. Thanks to Robert and Susan for attending this special
occasion.
*I enjoyed going back
to the filling station. Larry Bender no longer owns it and to me it showed. I
did not think the ribs and meat were as smoked and tender as when we were here
before. I of course enjoyed the trip over even though Roger kept saying snide
things about my beloved Lee' Summit, home of the Tigers. It was crowded but the
service was above average. I did like the slaw since Burgess is not here. Creme
soda good free refills. I would go back and eat there again.
*This is still a
pleasant eating environment with new owners.
The service is excellent and pleasant--a real plus given some of the
"servless" we have had. I
enjoyed all of it except my brisket sandwich and beans.
There are too many places that we go to that serve fresh, hot beef not to
expect it each time. And the beans were average with some taste but no character.
They seem to have gone to no-lead instead of ethyl.
*Well, this was my
second trip back to The Filling Station for a fill up.
This time, I had visions of pumping sauce directly onto my pulled pork
sandwich from the pumps outside and playing with the toy cars and airplanes
inside the restaurant. Okay, so
back to reality. I found not much
had changed except the ownership and a few cooking techniques. The seating is limited, but the retro 50's Route 66
atmosphere more than makes you forget about it.
The staff are friendly and I was wanting for nothing.
The pulled pork was a little dry, but the sauce got me in the groove.
Oh the sauce…man, I love it! Somebody
get me a doctor. For me, The
Filling Station doesn't do much wrong as far as barbecue restaurants go.
I recommend it.
*Being the Rookie, I enjoyed the whole experience.
The beans were nice and temperature hot.
I had the Smokey Joe sandwich and it was good.
I was able to try each of the three sauces.
They were all good, but preferred the medium. All in all, lunch was good.
Everyone should experience Lee's Summit through Jerry's eyes! :)
*Beans were thin in
flavor. Burn ends were OK but not excellent. I would go back again. The service
was very good!!
*My pulled pork was
flavorful and very plentiful. The sauces are good too, but the Filling Station
has definitely lost something since the place changed hands.
It was magical before and now it was just good. Still a great location
and terrific neighborhood eatery.
