*I'll start with the good news. A fun place to eat. I liked the
atmosphere. As a Minnesota native, it reminded me of days spent up at
the lakes. Service was good for a very busy lunch crowd. Love the Sauces
and today I favored the Devil's Spit. Average portions and value on my
sandwich lunch special. For the bad news, my Pork sandwich was seriously
lacking in any smoke flavor. Kind of like a Pork Roast sandwich with BBQ
sauce. Is there actually a smoker on site? The beans also need work. In
addition to lacking flavor, they serve up the usual pitiful portion and
call it a side. I've said this before, if you are going to serve a side
of beans, serve more than a thimble full! I'd go back again and try some
other things on the menu. Perhaps the brisket or ribs are better. I
would not consider this KC BBQ. Tourist BBQ perhaps?
*If you want good BBQ, do not go here. This a place that sells BBQ.
It is not a BBQ place. Food is average to fair at best. The place looks
a hunting lodge 125 miles north of St. Paul. It should be serving Pike
(fish), not BBQ.
*Dave’s was great. It is a new restaurant that opened near the
racetrack. It is also close to Cabella’s and Nebraska Furniture Mart.
I tried the "Feast for Two" and there was plenty of food for 3
people!! On the platter was chicken, brisket, coleslaw, beans and corn
bread. The brisket and ribs were excellent. I will probably get the
Brisket or Rib Tip combo the next time I visit. Service was good. We had
14 people on the trip and we were seated in 10 minutes. I would say it
is one of the better chain BBQ places we have been.
*The ribs were outstanding and so was the beef sandwich. The
meat tasted smoked but it was hard to tell for sure if it was put on or
placed in a smoker. Having 5 sauces to choose from was a real plus. I
liked 3 of the 5 choices. There was a mix up with my order but the
server apologized. The fries were above average and I would like to go
back and try some other dishes. The atmosphere reminded me of being in a
cabin in the woods or being at Stine's house.
*The atmosphere was a great, clean fun place that
is decorated to compliment the nearby Cabella's Sporting Goods Store. I
think that it is a great family restaurant with enough of a varied menu
for everyone, but it is not a "true barbeque" restaurant. The
meat does not taste like it has been naturally smoked and though it is
good, even tastes like artificial flavorings are added to get the taste
of smoked meat. The quantities are very good portions including the
drinks. The "pulled chicken" sandwich was good but was a
roasted chicken with barbeque sauce on it. The 6 sauces on the table
were all very good and our table agreed that they were very acceptable
choices. I would return to Famous Dave's, but would not expect to go
there because I or my guests are looking for "great barbeque".
Good food and a great atmosphere are definitely a more accurate
description of this restaurant.
*Famous Dave's is a big place and was able to accommodate a large
party with only a half hour wait. Portions were generous and the
food was good. Presentation of the food on the plates was very
attractive with both a bit of corn on the cob and a cornbread biscuit.
I had the brisket plate which was a large amount of meat and two sides.
The brisket was tender and tasty, but NO smoked flavor. The five
(or six?) different kinds of sauce were essential for providing the BBQ
experience. A good place for those not experienced in K.C. style
BBQ.
*A good restaurant serving good food but not a place for KC barbeque.
*I was hesitant to go out to try out the newest entry
into KC's BBQ market because it is a chain, but I was impressed.
The array of food and sides on the plate was superb. The ribs were
tender and tasty. The restaurant has a great feel to it and the
wait staff was great. The only down side was that I did not taste
smoke flavor in the meat. Maybe that is what KC has come to expect
in BBQ. This place will stand up very well as a restaurant in KC,
but will not be a favorite of hardcore fans of smoked meat. Try it
out.
